What I's

this page belongs to:

Chris Ryan

What I love

My wife Fran, my son Justin, my daughter Tammy and son-in-law Jamie, my grandson Ryan (no joke), travel, bird watching, real books, good old and new movies, the city, wine and conversation, Sunday morning, San Francisco, New York, Santa Fe.

What I read

Jarod Diamond's Guns, Germs & Steel; anything by Mark Twain, anything by E. O. Wilson, Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, the list goes on. I'm not a big poetry reader, but some of it really hits home. Non-fiction can feed my hunger for fiction and vice versa.

What I want to learn

Everything about social media. It's happening, and there's no point squawking about it. There's no technology that can only be used positively or negatively. If I embrace it, maybe I can help bring out the positives. Besides, learning new stuff keeps me young.

About Chris

Chris is a Kansas boy, born and raised in Emporia. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era as a hospital corpsman and psychiatric tech. After the service, he returned to the University of Kansas where he majored in English and graduated with highest distinction. He followed up with a master's in English from KU, publishing his thesis in Structuralist Review through the City University of New York.

An avid bird watcher, Chris can be found poring through avian-related publications, frightening his wife Fran with frequent outbursts of awe and admiration. Each year, he and Fran brave the cold winds of early spring to follow the sandhill crane migration in central Nebraska. They also take part in a number of other birdy activities that bewilder the sane.

It's all good, though. Frankly, Chris needs something to pull him away from his desk and get some exercise.
